Jim has conducted trials involving securities issues, libel, contract claims, product liability, professional negligence, corporate fraud, and criminal matters. He has extensive appellate experience in Ontario, and has appeared before the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of Canada.
Jim has acted in a number of Canada’s most complex restructuring proceedings, and conducted arbitrations and hearings before various administrative boards, including the Competition Tribunal. He has been counsel with respect to injunctions and shareholder oppression cases and has written and lectured on these topics.
He has extensive experience in class actions, having had involvement in more than twenty cases over the past decade. He has acted on the plaintiff’s side of class actions involving securities, pharmaceuticals, insurance products, medical devices, product liability, and aboriginal issues. Jim has also acted for defendants and is one of very few lawyers in Canada to have both successfully obtained and opposed certification.
He has appeared in the Lexpert/ American Lawyers Guide to the Top 500 Lawyers in Canada and the Lexpert Guide to the Leading US/Canada Cross-border Litigation Lawyers in Canada, publications that highlight the country’s most frequently recommended lawyers.
Jim graduated from Dalhousie Law School in 1981 and was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1983, and Nova Scotia in 1985.
